Open Access Publishing

We are keen to support alternative publishing models and we are pleased to offer authors and funders open access (OA) publication for research works, whether authored monographs or edited collections, provided they meet our criteria for specialist scholarly works.

Our open access books are typically published under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial (CC BY-NC) licence, which ensures that the title is freely available in perpetuity and in its final published form from the moment of first publication. Provided the original author is attributed, the content can be reused and redistributed for non-commercial purposes.

How it works
A DRM-free ebook PDF file is made available immediately upon publication for free download from our website and through the OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in European Networks) Library.

The book is also made available for purchase in print and in other digital editions (e.g. for an e-Reader device). A conventional royalty will be paid on sales of the print and digital editions, as agreed in the author’s contract.

In addition, the author is free to place the OA edition in their institutional repository, on their personal website and with any non-commercial subject repositories of their choosing provided that a link is made to the book’s page on our website.

Editorial, production and marketing
We make no editorial distinction between our open access books and those published conventionally: they are subject to the same independent and external peer review processes and benefit from the same high production standards. Our open access books also receive the full support of our sales and marketing resources throughout the world.

Under this model, the author (or a funder) pays a book publishing charge of £9,000 + VAT for a work of up to 100,000 words, unless the work is part of a specific series where other charges may apply. We are happy to consider longer works, but these may be subject to an additional fee. The publishing charge is paid on delivery of the final manuscript.
